The Things We Fail To See

I have been nursing this Orchid for over a year, and last week I decided the current bud was more than likely going to be the last one. Why? Because I couldn’t see any new stems or roots, and I hadn’t seen a new leaf in over five months. I literally gave my beautiful pink Orchid an expiry date.

Today I decided to water it (ahead of schedule), and as I held it up, I saw a new leaf creeping past the surface. As I looked closer, I saw two new roots poking through the base.

To say I was excited to see new life is an understatement, and I thought back to the three orchids I had before this one that all died, one I watered too much, and another I forgot to water and, the third didn’t have enough natural sunlight. When I bought this one, I vowed it would be my last because I clearly can’t care for such a delicate species. Lo and behold, a year later, my beauty is still blooming and still thriving, even when I couldn’t see her progress.

I think about people in general, and I wonder how many times we discarded things we wanted to do just because we didn’t recognize what was happening under the surface. I think about when we avoid doing things because we fail to see the natural talent or gift that lurks in our souls. Maybe the long periods in our lives when nothing is happening is the moment we need to be patient and realize that things are stirring up behind the scenes and below the surface.

I have often moved on too quickly, only to have to start over. Other times despite my gut feeling, I have remained in something too long, only to kick myself in the end. You know what I mean, it’s that relationship that should have ended BEFORE it started.

I guess what I am trying to say is that maybe we need to recognize all the things that are happening under the surface, and perhaps those things are preparing us for the next leg of our journey.

Sometimes, the most critical work happens beneath the surface, and maybe all we need is a little bit of faith a dose of patience and things will bloom into something beautiful.
